The Sand Painter || Wander around New York City and sooner or later you’re sure to encounter artist Joe Mangrum. Just look for a crowd—Mangrum’s always surrounded by one, held spellbound as he creates enormous neon-bright sand mandalas. Washington Square and Union Square are two of his favorite haunts, and his canvas of choice—a concrete plaza—belies a multitude of museum exhibits and commissions from private collectors the world over. Not to mention a Sesame Street appearance! @joemangrum

The Three Towers | Situated in the middle of Central Park is Belvedere Castle but I've always thought that, from a distance, especially through the trees, the massive, triple-turreted Beresford on Central Park West at 81st looks every bit a castle, a fortress, in fact. In reality, it's one of New York's most exclusive apartment buildings and home to many bold-face names. So, yes, it is a fortress.

Plus One || I was shooting the Bow Bridge in Central Park when a fellow photog set up right beside me and sighed, nodding at the crowded bridge. "I don't like people in my pictures," he said. "I don't mind them," I replied, "as long as they're in the right place." I will wait a long time for people to be in the right place. For this photo, taken on a very crowded High Line, I wanted only the cello player and the seated girl in the shot and I waited and waited for the crowd to move along. But just as the view cleared and I was lining up the shot, the guy with the backpack stopped and stood there, listening. Frustrated by another wave of onlookers approaching, I reluctantly snapped the shot, only to conclude later that the serendipitous shot was better than the shot I'd planned.

Pay it forward || Hurrying to catch a train, I noticed a half-open pink plastic Easter egg at the base of a tree on a New York City sidewalk. Trash and Vaudeville || Hawking leather and leopard skin since 1975, Trash and Vaudeville is one of the last reminders that St. Marks Place once was ruled by hippies, punks, mods, goths, rockers, rebels and other assorted subterraneans. Hard to believe, but the block's bohemian vibe has been replaced with the sunny dispositions of 7-Eleven, Chipotle and Pinkberry.

And then the unmistakable profile of the Empire State Building, one of New York's oldest landmarks, appears in the distance -- a beacon, an anchor, a magnet, romantic, nostalgic, timeless -- and you're suddenly reminded of where you are and how awesome it is to be there. A kiss is still a kiss | Brazilian artist Eduardo Kobra painted this amazing mural in Chelsea at 25th and 10th, inspired by Alfred Eisenstaedt's iconic photograph "VJ Day, The Kiss" of a sailor impulsively kissing a nurse in Times Square on Victory Over Japan Day, August 14, 1945. The mural is visible from the High Line and stops everyone in their tracks. The colors are brilliant, even more so when the light is just right, which is when I happened to wander past.

San Remo || As I trudged through The Ramble in Central Park just after dawn on the day of the blizzard, the twin towers of the San Remo appeared across the frozen boat pond, silhouetted against the dull white sky and perfectly framed by snow-covered branches.
